Extreme winter sports

Extreme sports are about exhilaration, skill and danger. They do not normally involve teams and there are very few rules. People who take part use their skills and experience to control the risks. That control is what makes them sports and not just dangerous behaviour.

Here are just some of the extreme sports which are popular in Britain:

Kitesurfing: a growing band of enthusiasts have been discovering the thrilling combination of kite, board and waves. These kites can be up to 17 metres long. Catch a gust and you’re motoring – up, down and across the surf. British Ladies kitesurfing champion Jo Wilson says: “It’s always an adrenalin rush. It’s unpredictable. You could jump 5ft or 35ft. You never know if you’re going to go up in the air, and your heart is just going boom, boom, boom all the time.”

Coasteering: this is exploring the coastline without worrying about a coastal path or finding a rocky cliffy cove blocking your route. You climb, dive, swim and clamber from A to B. There are about 15 operators in the UK offering coasteering.

Sky diving: traditional parachuting just doesn’t sound risky enough, does it? So now skydiving is the name for jumping from a plane and listening to your heart pounding as you hurtle towards earth before you open your parachute at the last moment. Once you’ve got a few jumps under your parachute you can throw in some extra risks, for example try a ‘hook turn’. Dean Dunbar is a participant of extremedreams.com and his first sky dive was in 1998. Since then he’s been hooked on the buzz of the extreme, saying: “Every so often I have to go out and do something scary.”

Mountain biking: it’s been around so long that bikers are no longer satisfied with just going up and down a mountain. Nowadays thrill seeking mountain bikers want a big slope to go down very, very fast. “It’s pure mad, downhill,” according to Dean Dunbar. “People go to old ski resorts, take the chair lift to the top then bomb down – amazingly not killing themselves.”

Soccer (football) – learn the lingo!

Back of the net! A reflection on the language of football

Have you ever stopped to think about some of the language we use to describe the world of football or soccer as it is also known? The word ‘soccer’ comes from ‘association’. Association Football was the full name of the sport in its early years. The ‘association’ part of the name differentiated it from rugby football, which, following the same pattern as ‘soccer’, is sometimes called ‘rugger’.

2014 Brazil World CupThe language used to describe football can sometimes be a little impenetrable (difficult to understand), even if you know how the game is played and have some experience of watching or playing it. Take this description of a passage of play (a short section of a game), as an example of how tricky football language can be. PROČITAJTE VIŠE OVDE

Leo Mesi glumi u TV spotu za srpski čips! Jeftina fotomontaža? Procenite sami…

Leo Mesi reklamira Chipsy u Brazilu

Lay’s TV commercial featuring football superstar, Leo Messi

Lays Commercial Featuring Leo MessiLay’s announced a major global advertising campaign and new multi-dimensional promotional partnership launching in over 60 markets featuring record breaking football superstar, Leo Messi. The master brand commercial and centerpiece of the campaign was shot over the course of three days in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and Barcelona, Spain. With the great taste of Lay’s potato chips at the center, the commercial builds off the insight that people enjoy pinching a Lay’s whenever they are near one and shows that not even a world-class footballer is can avoid his fans’ fingers. The commercial follows Messi as he crosses the streets of Rio, encountering fans who are clamoring for photos and autographs. With the international hit “Balada Tchê Tcherere Tchê Tchê” by Brazilian superstar Gusttavo Lima providing the infectious backdrop, the commercial ends with Messi able to even the score and pinch his own Lay’s chip when posing for photos with unsuspecting Lay’s fans.

Exclusive Nemanja Vidic interview ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Chelsea

Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic looks ahead to Sunday’s showdown with Chelsea and assesses the state of the play in the Barclays Premier League…

Fudbalski kamp Manchester Uniteda, Nemanja Vidic

Has last weekend’s win over Swansea lifted spirits in the camp?

It was important to win that game, especially after a few bad results. It’s lifted spirits, yes, but we have to keep winning and if we can look at the table and see ourselves much higher than we are at the moment then we will be more satisfied. But until then we have to keep training well and improving, and we need to win a few matches in a row.

You’ve only really been used to success in your time at United and seeing the team in the top positions in the table – how does it feel when you look at it now?

I’m not looking at it now! [Smiles]. I am waiting until we win a few matches in a row then I’ll look at it again. Hopefully we can perform well in the next game. We need consistency now, not necessarily with great performances, but with results; we need a few wins in a row.

Nemanja Vidic intervjuRealistically, what is achievable between now and the end of the season?

It’s hard to say. My view is that the results in the next six or seven matches will tell us what our aim is for the rest of the season. The next game is Chelsea away – a tough match, but if we win we’ll only be six points behind Chelsea. That still gives us a chance to think about maybe winning the title. I know, at the moment, it maybe doesn’t sound right to think that way [when you look at the table], but we still hope that with a few wins in a row we can still challenge and from there we can see what our position is.

So you haven’t given up on the title?

No, I’m not giving up, not yet.

Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie have been out for periods in the season – how difficult has it been to be without them?

I think we have had bad luck this season. We had tough fixtures at the start of the season when we had changed the manager and there was a lot of pressure and expectation on him. If we had won the first few matches maybe everything would be different. We haven’t had luck with injuries either. It’s been a very stop-start season for us and there are a few reasons for that. I’m not trying to find excuses because we have a big squad and a lot of good players, but I just hope there will be a better times for us coming up.

Results in the league have improved, winning five of the last six ahead of Sunday’s trip to Chelsea. But is it frustrating the other teams haven’t been dropping points in that time?

It is frustrating, but I’ve said before that when you lose matches some of your opponents lose matches as well. I don’t think we should look at other teams. We need to focus on ourselves and try to do the best we can and then we’ll see where we are. Hopefully with a few players coming back from injury we can be stronger in the last part of the season.
