Najseksipilniji izgovori sveta i jezik ljubavi

Najseksepilniji izgovori sveta

Patrika Darbo is a character actress who talked with the students about how she got her start acting later in life, after all but giving up on her dream. She also talked about the two times she worked with Hollywood great Clint Eastwood, and what makes someone a good director. Her experience with a few bad directors helped the class understand the differences. Patrika also shared tips and advice on how to make a good impression in an audition.

Farshad Farahat was a featured actor in the acclaimed Ben Affleck film, Argo. He was originally cast as an extra, a non-speaking part, in the Tehran airport scene. A twist of luck, and coming to the set prepared, gave him the opportunity to land his first big speaking role, as the guard at the airport who almost prevents the US embassy workers from boarding the plane back to America. This became his breakout role, and he’s now featured on an NBC prime time series. He talked with the students about making your own opportunities in the film industry, and working with (and breaking) the ethnic stereotypes in Hollywood.

As well as benefiting from guest speaker talks at Kings LA, the students were also lucky enough to visit the USC School of Cinema, where they attended a talk given by a respected cinematography professor at the university. They also visited the American Film Institute, and the internet production facility Maker Studios, owned by the Walt Disney Company.

English Plus Film teacher Martha Cotton commented “Getting an up close view of how Hollywood works is part of the Kings educational experience. This is much more than just a classroom experience.”

Verbalists’ My LONDON language travel program – THE EAST END TOUR

Street art in East End, London
Street art in East End

East London is a street art and graffiti hub, with artists travelling from all over the world to leave their mark on London. Lots of artists are living in the East End, but this part of London also played an important role in the career of famous celebrities. Jamie Oliver opened a social Restaurant in the East End, Alfred Hitchcock made some movies there and Damien Hirst made his name in a local gallery.

Verbalisti will show you the street art that has come to characterize the East End, most notably by the elusive artist Banksy, and walk down streets lined with family stores laden with rolls of brightly-decorated fabric. But this tour is more than just a history lesson – you will also be treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the secret world of street art. With over 40 pieces of art located both above and below eye-level, down narrow alleys and in tight corners there is plenty for you to look at. The tour is unique and fresh with the artwork changing daily – we may even get to see a street artist at work!

Jack The Ripper, London's first serial killer, never caught
Jack The Ripper, London’s first serial killer, never caught

But there is much more! As part of our language travel tour, you’ll also touch a bit on the terrifying legacy of Jack the Ripper, one of the world’s first serial killers. We will follow the steps of Jack The Ripper, who was never caught, as we trace his path amongst the maze of narrow cobbled streets, where in five short months of the summer of 1888 the East End of London was terrorized by the most brutal & horrific slaughter of a series of women. The Jack the Ripper murders occurred in an area comprising of little more than one square mile, with all victims being prostitutes. There were 11 murders in total, and these became known as the Whitechapel Murders.

Back in those times, Whitechapel had some of London’s worst slums, highest death rates and the most dreadful living conditions. Every day was a constant fight for survival, where people were endlessly fighting for jobs in order to feed their families. The area was densely populated, with the worst area seen to be the “evil quarter mile”.

We will also explore the only circus school in England on our tour through this amazing quarter.

At the end of the tour, you are free to carry on exploring on your own or you can join your guide for lunch at one of the finest East End curry houses. Yum! Or you can take a breather and enjoy a Pie & Mash, the traditional dish of the working class in London, in one of the numerous pubs.

Highlights:

  • Learn about the ever-changing street art scene in the East End of London
  • Hear harrowing stories about East End gangsters
  • Follow in the footsteps of the notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper
  • Find out what Dracula, Banksy, and the Elephant Man all have in common

Zanimljiva istorija bele svadbene torte u blogu engleskog jezika

History of tiered wedding cakes, VerbalistiWedding Cakes

St. Bride's Church in London
St. Bride’s Church in London

Although there’s no factual proof, the legacy of the tiered cake has been accredited to a bakers apprentice working in Ludgate Hill during the 18th century. The apprentice, William Rich, is said to have fallen madly in love with the daughter of his boss and, to impress her and win her hand in marriage, he created a large cake inspired by the spire of St Bride’s church, thereby giving us our tradition of a tiered cake

The multi-tiered cake was originally reserved for the English royalty. They would also use these cakes for christenings, as the wedding and christening events would take place very near each other. This fact rationalized the thought that all weddings should have three tiered cakes. The bottom tier was for the wedding reception, the second tier would be distributed amongst guests and the third tier would be for the christening. As the wedding and christening became disassociated with each other, the top tier was then saved by the bride and groom for their first anniversary. The top tier is now considered a nice reminder of their wedding day.

The royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, July 29, 1981
The royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, July 29, 1981

It was the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840 that really set the fashion for weddings – the dresses and cakes both became big and white as a norm. In the minds of most people, wedding cakes are supposed to be white. The symbolism attached to the colour white, makes explaining this tradition rather simple. White has always denoted purity, and it relates to white wedding cake icing that first appeared in Victorian times. Another way in which a white wedding cake relates to the symbol of purity, has its basis in the fact that the wedding cake was originally referred to as the bride’s cake. This not only highlighted the bride as the central figure of the wedding, but also created a visual link between the bride and the cake.

Cutting of the Cake Tradition

Wedding cakes take centre stage in the traditional cake cutting ceremony, symbolically the first task that bride and groom perform jointly as husband and wife. This is one tradition that most of us have witnessed and wedding photographers have captured many times.

Cutting the wedding cakeThe first piece of wedding cake is cut by the bride with the “help” of the groom. This task originally was delegated exclusively to the bride. It was she who cut the wedding cake for sharing with her guests. Distributing pieces of wedding cake to one’s guests is a part of that tradition from the Roman Empire when guests clamored for the crumbs. But, as numbers of wedding party guests grew, so did the size of the wedding cake, making the distribution process impossible for the bride to undertake on her own. Wedding cake cutting became more difficult with early multi-tiered cakes, because the icing had to be hard enough to support the wedding cake’s own weight, so the cutting of the wedding cake became a joint project. After the cake cutting ceremony, the couple proceed to feed one other from the first slice. This provides another lovely piece of symbolism, the mutual commitment of bride and groom to provide for one another.
